Penn Alexander School takes First Place

by  Nancy Matlack, 6th grade Technology Teacher

Penn Alexander School was extremely excited to be named the First Prize winner in the Philadelphia Zoo UNLESS Contest. I am especially thankful for the opportunity that this Contest provided for my students. Participation in this Contest raised the awareness of my students about the challenges facing orangutans. For many of my students, this was their first experience with activism and advocacy. They have read about organizations that have supported many causes in our Nation’s history. However, the experience of participating in this Contest will hopefully encourage them to become passionate about a global cause that affects our world, it’s people and animals. The monetary prize will be used to purchase a video camera to document school functions and events. We can only hope that the real winners will be the orangutans, as more people are made aware of their plight.
